This story finds the perfect place between whimsical and terrifying, in a way that is hauntingly bitter-sweet. Darcy’s voice is delightful and her characterisation wonderful. There is a sequel, which is even more terrifyingly whimsical.
Honestly, I feel a bit sad for anyone who has not witnessed the 2006 cinematic masterpiece that is The Spectacular Spider-Man. It was partially based on Brian Micheal Bendi’s Ultimate Spider-Man (uses original characters like Kenny “Kong” McFarlane), and it manages to exist as yetanother teenage Peter Parker cartoon, and, arguably one of the best cartoons Marvel has produced. I don’t know, maybe i’m just bitter that it’s still cancelled.
However, disapointment aside, this fic is fab-u-lous. It is a first-person narrative from my man Flash Thomson; soccer player and lady killer and it is absolutely hilarious. The characterisation of Flash is perfect. He and Peter Parker, weenie extraordinaire, are stuck in a video game store together, while some robbers have broke in. Pete, desprate to switch to Spider-Man, hints to Flash that he has a “secret”.
I honestly don’t know what the best part of this fic is- Flash’s complete obliviousness towards Peter, or the lengths Pete will go to in order to save his secret. A must read, definitely.

Tea Time in Genosha (The Negasonic Teenage Warhead Remix)
Today’s fic rec was the fantastic Tea Time in Genosha by Cherryice. Today I’m posting a special bonus rec, a remix of this fic by Anneline: Tea Time in Genosha (The Negasonic Teenage Warhead Remix). Anneline’s writing is always very sexual and often dark, and this is no exception. Here, Ellie knows of her impending death and is mourning the life as an adult woman that she will never have, and Emma symbolises that life to her. Emma, of course, has no intention of being anyone’s symbol, but ends up immersed in time and loss despite herself.
One of those remixes that refocuses and deepens the original story, this fic is grim and wonderful.

Characters/Pairings: Emma Frost, Negasonic Teenage Warhead
Length: 1700
Warnings: Character death
The X-Men have recently been going down the DIY nation path, with varying degrees of success, but this story is about Emma Frost and her life in the mutant nation that preceded Utopia: Genosha. Emma was a teacher there, and the students – with all their abilities – were as bolshy and confused and mean as teenagers anywhere. This story is about a conversation between Emma and her student Negasonic Teenage Warhead who may or may not be precognitive. The student’s name is given here as Nora: she was later named Ellie Phiminster in canon, but this wasn’t known at the time this story was written. It’s also a story about living in a small community and about degrees of power and experience, about death and remembering. Fabulous Emma characterisation, particularly because she doesn’t want to listen or change.
This is one of my favourite Emma Frost fics because Emma is cruel and kind all at once, cold and caring, and this huge pivotal moment in her life is also a very small one, beautifully and terrifyingly described here.

A Small Thing Worn Thin
This is a story taking place when both Thor and Loki are children and they go on an adventure. Not everything go as expected but it is adorable - with wonderful interplay between the brothers - cleverly plotted, and with heartbreaking hints of things to come.

Length: ~8000 words

Superman: Identity Crisis, Superman Returns (movie), The Death of Bruce Wayne.
Distress Managed
The solution to your continuity-based woes, Distress Managed fills in the dark empty space in your heart after Superman Returns, cures the endless hours of whining brought on by One More Day, and involves Mary-Jane Watson contemplating the “sordid three-ways” of Louis, Clark, and Superman. It elegantly mixes together the two universes ( Bucky Barnes delivering Lois’ baby still baby still gives me the fuzzy feels), scrapping together the meeting of Mary-Jane and Lois throughout the years, their relationship easily repairing the sad facts of canon and it’s just really nice and heart-warming and wow, the end is perfect. The best part of the fic, overall, is the characterisation of Lois and Mary-Jane, who, instead of being parts of their husband’s stories, are integral, important members of the universe
A fair warning: It contains a lot of spoilers from the last ten years of DC/Marvel continuity. Although you can read, and cherish Distress Managed, without the corresponding canon , it is definitely more enjoyable when you understand the events (or a quick wiki).
Etrangere introduces Thor fandom:
The Thor fandom is a pretty new and active fandom which mostly sprung as a result of the movie. Although there is a rich comics canon – not to mention Norse mythology – that also informs and shapes it. While Thor/Loki is the most popular pairing in fanfics — and Balder/Loki for purely comics based fics — there’s a variety of pairings and gen fics written for it. I’m mostly here to rec Loki centered, and, to be honest, the fandom does kind of revolved around Loki.
If you like:
- mythology
- epic family drama
- manipulative bastards
- tragic anti-villains
- redemptive stories for them
- or corruption stories for them
- the angst of people who hate themselves yet can’t stop themselves from the road they walk on
- horned hats
- mindfuckery
- genderqueer characters
- hate/love angst
- mpreg
(although not necessarily all those things at the same time)
…this may be a fandom for you!
I won’t claim to have a deep and thorough knowledge of Thor comics, but I’ll do my best to make an overview of the character’s history:

The Shapeshifter
Loki in all his seductive, perverse, manipulative, and contrarian glory, and the way he plays with four men, with a specific purpose in mind. It is beautifully written and slyly crafted, quite kinky in a very fucked up way. And the mindfuckery of the premise is deliciously rendered.

Prisoner 731 (series)
Rated PG except for one section marked R for disturbing content.
“Prisoner 731” is an epic AU series, about 60,000 words in all, which was begun in 1996. It’s about a prisoner, a character familiar to the readers, who has escaped the horrors of Sinister’s labs. He hides in the Morlock tunnels that run under the X-Men’s home and begins his slow recovery of his self. The X-Men try to help him, but their help is not always wanted or adequate, despite their shared hatred of Sinister. A great deal of later canon actually tied into this quite closely - fans of the current X-23 series in particular might like the Mister Sinister sections – but this series is a marvellous precursor. It’s a terrific mix of hurt/comfort and epic adventure with the early 90s X-Men.
“Prisoner 731” was written before warnings were commonly used in fandom, so please read with care as there is a good deal of violence and some medical torture. Eventual Remy/Rogue, but mostly a team epic with appearances from many, many characters.
